Amrita University or Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham University is located in Coimbatore in the Southern state of Tamil Nadu. The huge campus, spread across an area of 900 acres, is surrounded by lush greenery and mountains. It caters to about 18,000 students that have an approximately 1 to 1 ratio of boys and girls. The majority of students at the university are residential students out of which the First-year students stay in the hostels within the ashram premises. The institute is dedicated to making their students strong both academically and mentally and promotes healthy activities like Yoga and meditation. The life of students The life of students at Amrita University is quite wholesome as they are treated like a big family that gets together for studying as well as extracurricular activities. The Ashram houses a temple where the morning prayers take place after which breakfast is served. The classes at the university start at 8:30 am and end at 4:30 pm for all batches. In the evening, children can sit for Bhajans that are carried out in the Ashram prayer hall. This allows students to relax and be refreshed after hours of classes. Then, at 9 pm, dinner is served, after which the students are free to do what they like. Hostels The students who stay in the hostels get to participate in activities like sports, music, meditation and yoga. There are 7 complexes where students from different institutes in the campus can be housed. There is a central kitchen that prepares pure vegetarian food that the students can eat in the dining halls as well as in the canteen. This collective living scenario makes students understanding and sensitive towards each other. Student Activities There are several activities that go on at Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham besides the curriculum. These include Amrita Kalotsavam, Sports Day, Onam celebrations, campus day and Amma's birthday celebration. Amrita Kalotsavam is a two-day festival where the students show off their skills and talents. They are intra university competitions between the houses. Sports Day is organized once every even semester while campus day is held every year where parents are invited as well, to look at the cultural activities and project exhibitions. In the month of September, Amma's devotees from all over the globe gather at Amritapuri to celebrate her birthday. The students participate in the service activities that are carried out for three days. Research Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham takes pride in its research based on humanitarian, societal, relief and community development. The institute has started groups for achieving excellence in Cyber Security, Virtual Labs, Wireless Networks and Applications, Haptics, Biomedical Engineering and others. There are several projects that are underway at the university that hold a lot of potential in revolutionizing communication and networks. The life of students goes well beyond just the academics.
